Education
Silchar has some of the best educational institutes in the whole of North East India. One of the 19
National Institute of Technology (formerly known as Regional Engineering Colleges), NIT Silchar is one of the oldest engineering colleges in the North-East. REC Silchar was upgraded to National Institute of Technology
status in 2003. Silchar also has a Medical college, a Polytechnic Institute, B.Ed colleges, two Law colleges and an Industrial
Training Institute (ITI). After several years of persistent efforts Silchar got its own university -- Assam University -- a central university. The reputed schools of SIlchar are Kendriya Vidyalaya silchar, Holy Cross School, Silchar Collegiate
School, Don Bosco Academy and South Point School, Adhar Chand H.S. School, Narsing School, Govt. Boys School, and Govt. Girls
school, amongst others. Amongst colleges the best known ones are Guru Charan College, Cachar College, Radhamadhav College
etc. Guru Charan College is one of the most respected colleges in the whole of Assam. The colleges is credited with producing
some of the best intellectuals of the region.
Recent years have seen Silchar emerge as a potential educational place where denizens from the trouble-torn
North-East region come to the town for their children's education. Today a large number of professionals from Silchar are
to be found around the globe in almost all countries and regions.
Historical Background
Cachar district records
"the management of the affairs of the district was entrusted after annexation, to Lieutenant Fisher,
an officer of approved ability and great local experience. for some months Cachar continued to be administrered from Cherrapunji, the head quarters of the Agent to the Governor General, but in consideration
of practical difficulties early in 1833 Fisher had his head quarters at Dudputli which however were soon shifted to Silchar
for the sake of convenience."
In the 1850s, British tea planters discovered the game polo in Manipur on the Burmese border with India. The first polo club in the world was formed at Silchar. The first competitive
modern form of Polo was also played out in Silchar and the plaque for this feat still stand at the back side of the District
Library, Silchar. Other clubs followed and, today, the oldest in the world is the Calcutta Club, founded in 1862.
The Assam Bengal Railway brought Silchar into the Indian railway map in 1899. The railway line from
Lunding to Silchar is hailed as one of the most exciting pristine railway tracks of India. Built by the Britishers during
the colonial rule, the Meter Gauge line stands testimony to the grandiose of what was once a highly popular city in the North-East.
In 2005, the town made news when the whole of North East rallied to vote a local contestant to win

Karimganj
Karimganj is a city and a municipal board in Karimganj district in the Indian state of Assam. Karimganj is located at 24.87° N 92.35°
E. It has an average elevation of 13 metres (42 feet).
Demographics
As of 2001 India censusIndia, Karimganj
had a population of 52,316. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Karimganj has an average literacy rate
of 83%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 87%, and female literacy is 79%. In Karimganj, 9% of the
population is under 6 years of age.
Hailakandi
Hailakandi is a city and a municipal board in Hailakandi district in the Indian state of Assam.
Geography
Hailakandi is located at 24.68° N 92.57° E. It has an average elevation of 21 metres
(68 feet).
It comprises two notified towns viz. Hailakandi (district headquarters) and Lala and one industrial town ship viz. Panchgram.
A Municipal Board governs Hailakandi town & a town Committee governs Lala. It has five development blocks viz. Algapur,
Hailakandi, Lala, Katlicherra & South Hailakandi development Block. There is a Mahkuma Parishad named Hailakandi Mahkuma
Parishad covering these 5 Development Blocks. There are total of 62 Nos. of Gaon Panchayat under these five blocks. The district
is divided into four revenue circles comprising of a total of 393 villages (including 27 forest villages). Nearly half the
district consists of forests. Out of the remaining half, 33.2% is under cultivation. Rice is the main crop. District has got
17 tea gardens. The District has 4 Police stations, 2 Police out post, 2 Colleges, 43 H/E, H/School, 247 ME/ MV Schools and

Justice for Subhas Chandra Bose 
An Indian Ambassador was allowed to meet Bose -- on the condition that he would not
try to speak to him. When the Ambassador wondered about what to do in case Bose wished to speak to him, "he was told that

PMO denied saying relations may suffer with foreign countries.
